Nuclear Power Stations in a Warming World
by Dennis Leggett
FIG 10
Compare this aerial view to fig 9 and you will see that the two twin reactor nuclear power stations are situated right on the tip of the ness. Annually 30,000 cubic metres of shingle are needed for beach replenishment to combat the effects of the longshore drift erosion effect.Beach is moved from the west side of the foreland and deposited on the eastern side. However some is lost, ie it is carried out to sea. 'Lost' beach has to be sourced from terrestrial sources which are fast running out. Replenishment from the channel would have disastrous effects on plaice breeding grounds which would seriously affect the livelihood of local fishermen.
