The
Saxon Chronicles and written land-grant Charters from Saxon Kings to
church establishments, allow closer generalisations of the Marsh geography.
In the next two centuries Romney Marsh becomes well populated. For Walland
Marsh the general picture is of sinuous sea channels winding through
raised salt marsh vegetation. Probably the rivers lost themselves in
the marshlands. Distinct courses and riverine estuaries are consquently
difficult to ascertain. The sea was present near Appledore. Eastbridge,
Lydd and Brooklands, using present names. However despite the wealth
of individual records exact mappings are not merited.
