The
map reflects a previous long period of climatic calm coupled with markedly
increased population growth. These had spurred the drive for land reclamation.
There is wide ranging evidence available to locate 'innings', as reclamations
were termed. They had increased in Walland Marsh, extending from adjacent
established estates and bordering the sinuous infiltrations of the sea.
Hythe harbour had finally infilled. Romney developed as an alternative port, but soon suffered silting. The two parallel walls of the Rhee, which can be traced today, were used to deliver fresh and sea water, collected at Appledore, to flush Romney Harbour. 1236 saw the first of the great storms that radically changed the topography of the Marsh. |
