LYNNE BEAUMONT

I am implacably opposed to any expansion of Lydd Airport that requires the runway to be lengthened. I play as full a part as possible in the campaign against the expansion. The jobs created will be at a very high environmental cost. The expansion is wrong at national/international level – aviation emissions are the fastest growing source of greenhouse gases. It is wrong at regional level – we already have an airport at Manston that is struggling to emerge as a centre for commercial passenger air travel. It is wrong at local level – the roads and other infrastructure are totally inadequate to support the expansion and the Marsh is a unique environment that must be protected.

As regards Nuclear power, I have very strong reservations about the storage and processing of nuclear waste. Instead, I believe that there should be massive investment in micro – generation systems. These should be compulsory on all ‘new builds’ and should be encouraged on existing buildings through the tax system
