Cllr George Bunting, Conservative Candidate for Harvey West Ward
In responding, these are MY own views and do not commit the local Conservative Party in anyway.

Whilst I agree that the nuclear industry has still to solve some problems regarding the transport and disposal of waste, the two stations at Dungeness have operated over the past 40 years without a major mishap. I think that to be a very good safety record - I would have serious concerns about the plants operating on the other side of the Channel.

When looking at the provision of a national policy for energy (which thankfully is not a task that this Council has) it would be difficult not to envisage this without a nuclear participation. The consideration of a new 'C' station at Dungeness must be part of this.

For four decades we have lived with the two stations there and I believe all the expertise gained over this years should not be scattered to the four corners of the British Isles.

The residents of Lydd and New Romney deserve good work opportunities and the building of the 'C' station would achieve this - this would also help maintain the local economy in that area.

I am a supporter of renewable energy in whatever form provided the Government take into account all views. There is certainly concern about the effect windfarms may have on bird life especially the migratory types. To overcome this it may be necessary to reduce the number of turbines on each site but this may lead to more sites. I welcome the opportunity to monitor turbines errected in the Channel but we must bear in mind that this is one if not the busiest sea lanes in the world. I am not aware of why there should be subsidised National Grid connections.

Yes I am aware about the Government's role next year. I have read reports for both sides of the argument but not being a scientist am able to making a judgement either way. The Government have a duty to the nation to undertake tests and from then make a recommendation.

Maybe they should be grown under glass (similar to the Eden Project) so that nothing gets out!

Council Officers are aware of the 'Emergency Plan' and this would be activated if it became necessary. I am not in favour to the issuing of potassium iodate tablets to every household in he District - this could cause unneccessary alarm and distress not to mention abuse by those members of the community who do not want or wish to be responsible for their own actions.

Yes I support safe and sensible cyle routes to schools and town centres which the Council is now following a detailed assessment, preparing to implement. We are part of the nationwide Sustrans cyleway.

I am totally against 'Operation Stack' and believe that not enough effort has been put into finding suitable alternatives by other organisations. There is far too much freight being carried on the roads and I would like to see much of this transported to rail. I would also question the inability of Eurotunnel and Dover Harbour to provide more parking spaces at their respective terminals.

Shepway has the largest target for re-cycling in Kent this year and next year even higher. If we want to exceed this then more money will need to spent in this part of the Council's activities.

We need the co-operation of the community to achieve the target set but many householders are still not responding to helping us reach them. This summer the Council will began to extend across the District following successful trials in the Elham Valley, Cheriton and a part of Hythe, the collection of 'green waste'. This should help us with our target.

If you look to Germany, where every household recycles, then the Government has to take a stand and bring in legislation to improve the position. There is also in my mind, a requirement for suppliers to adopt a different attitude to packinging - less is what is required especially plastic!

For Shepway there is still a need to find an outlet for plastic recycling. So Barrie, I hope I have responded to all your questions.

Kind regards,
George Bunting (Conservative Candidate for Harvey West Ward)
