Ken Oiller, Liberal Democrat Candidate, Lydd

Dungeness I do not support another Nuclear power station at Dungeness, Nuclear Power has proved to be economically unsound, also the problems of waste disposal make it environmentally unsustainable.
There is scaremongering going on re job losses in Lydd to support the idea of rebuild. Many staff will be needed for a long time to decommission the plant and many of the work force come from well away from Lydd

Renewable Energy
Yes I welcome wind farms, however feel that the ideal place would be off shore. Areas of population or places of great natural beauty must be protected, full consultation with English Nature, RSPB and CPRE would be needed.

GM Foods I am aware of government proposals for this and I am deeply concerned. There is evidence of cross pollination over wide areas, I believe that the trial fields pose a threat to the environment which should not be allowed to continue. There must be a national policy of extended isolation distances between GM crops and non GM crops also at least a five year moratorium on commercial exploitation of this unproven technology The latter is Party policy I believe.

Emergency Plan Yes I am aware of this plan I understand it is reviewed on a regular basis.
Households within the evacuation area receive Calendars with instructions on the back from the Power Station. This Year I am not sure about. I do not think everyone should have the lodate tablets I understand they have a limited shelf life and people might lose them. However I do think we need a very robust system for the distribution of said tablets and surely this would depend on wind direction at the time of emergency?

Safe Cycle Routes Of course I support this idea however land is not always available if in Private ownership, also funding for this is with County however I would press for our share of the budget on this whilst developing the Walking Bus scheme which I believe would be much more cost effective as a starting point.

Operation Stack
My personal view is to make more use of railways. My party supports the development of lorry carrying trains to get most transport off the roads together with a subsidy for general rail freight I fully endorse this. Whilst not in favour of a large temporary lorry park which would cause environmental damage I can support the planned but not built, service area near Stanford on the M20. The suggested alternative to Operation Stack is that there should be designated routes for lorries between Nations it would be illegal to block these, there by stopping French farmers etc from blockading Calais and causing Operation Stack when the weather was fine.

Recycling
No Shepway needs to do a lot more, spending must be re-arranged less paper exercises more real action.
