Michael Walsh, Labour Party Candidate, Lydd

DUNGENESS
Do you support new build at Dungeness power station even though the industry has not solved its waste problems?

I support new build at Dungeness for employment reasonsbut not necessarily a Nuclear Plant. Nuclear Waste Management concerns me greatly and for that reason I support Government Policy of alternative methods of producing electricity such as Wind Farms, Hydro Electric Schemes, Solar etc. The fitting of scrubber filters at Drax Power Station in South Yorkshire has proved a great success in reducing carbon monoxide and sulphur emissions to a minimum. Conventional Power Stations (new) fitted with these filters could be an option but in my opinion not a priority.

RENEWABLE ENERGY
Do you welcome wind farms in the district?
Should the government be urged to do more to develop all forms of renewable energy - eg subsidising national grid connections?
Wind farms should be placed on high terrain as done in North Wales not in places like the beautiful Romney Marsh. Wind Farms here would scupper any plans to open up the Marsh to tourism. I believe that the entire electricity industry should be taken back into public ownership.

GM FOODS

Are you aware that over the next year or so the Government will decide whether to allow GM crops to be commercially grown across the UK?
Do you have any concerns?
I am fiercely opposed to this method of food production.

EMERGENCY PLAN
The government has made local authorities near nuclear power stations responsible for drawing up plans to protect the public in a nuclear emergency. Do you know what Shepway's local emergency plan is, and do you think that potassium iodate tablets should be available to everyone in the district?

I am not at all happy with the fact that SDC is now responsible for Emergency Operations at Dungeness, indeed I was not aware of this and know nothing of SDC's Emergency Plan. I know that Potassium Iodate tablets are available at Lydd Police Station - that's all! They should be available to all. Responsibility in emergencies should be returned to the Nuclear Industry.

CYCLING
Do you support safe sensible cycle routes to schools and town centres? Would you make this a budget priority?

A keen cyclist I supported the Government's National Network - this should be extended to include school routes and town centres. Budget priority? Definately.

OPERATION STACK
Do you have any alternative solutions to the underlying problems caused by HGV's on our motorways?

The Rail Network should be taken back into public ownership and upgraded to accommodate most freight movements thus reducing HGVs on our roads. Licences to move freight by HGV should be limited and monitored. Waterways such as rivers and canals should be brought back into use.. I do not think a huge lorry park should be built.

RECYCLING
Is Shepway doing enough?

No!

Yours sincerely
